About Us

This is the original land map  for Bassett Settlement in Erving Township of Howard County IN

Bassett Settlement was located in Howard County (Ervin Township). 


The settlement was a  thriving community of African Americans established circa 1830s.  The original founder Britton Bassett was a "free born colored" that immigrated from Greene County NC to Indiana.


They  owned large amounts of  land and were self-sufficient. 

Rev. Miles Bassett

Descendant of Britton Bassett (founder of Basset Settlement). Established, funded and built churches throughout Indiana. Educated by Quakers.

Rev. Richard Bassett

Descendant of Britton Bassett (founder of Basset Settlement). Was the 2nd African American elected to Indiana state legislator(1892).
